Since 1990 the world has lost over 175 million hectares of forest. These trees provided oxygen, supported environments, and provided a foundation for nearly 8 billion people to call home.
Even if we totally stopped burning fossil fuels tomorrow, which is impossible, the polar ice caps and glaciers will continue to melt, forests will continue to burn, and storms and droughts will be more common and more severe, because there is already so much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
Plus, the climate crisis is already affecting ecosystems in drastic ways. Cherry trees are blooming earlier than they have in over 1200 years because of earlier and warmer springs. Plants and animals are being forced to adapt to climate change at different paces, resulting in ecological mismatches for parts of the ecosystem that depend on one another.
According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, “Education is an essential element of the global response to climate change.” Which is why education is our mission here at Global Conscience. World.
Education helps people understand and address the impact of global warming, increases “climate literacy” among young people, encourages changes in their attitudes and behavior, and helps them adapt to climate change related trends.”²
